  • Loved, loved, loved this podcast and thank you for sharing her book! I think this is probably one of the most valuable approaches I’ve ever seen out there. I really perked up when she mentioned studying Chinese and Ayurvedic approaches. I lived in Hong Kong for 2 years and was just starting to understand some of the things my friends would talk about like what type of foods they should eat at what time and really paying closing attention to their own cycles on a week by week basis. I think this is a massive piece missing in the western culture – that intuitive attention to minute details and how a food-based approach can really contribute to better health overall.

    This was fascinating! I love that she comes from such a scientific background, and I was intrigued by many of the revelations. I really like the idea of leveraging your personal (hormonal) power in your career, and I love that she is bringing to light women’s’ issues that are often swept under the rug (like the “controversial” segment on Dr. Oz, she mentioned — why aren’t we all taught these things??). I thankfully don’t suffer from many of these issues (but really feel for those who do, including many friends and family members) – though a couple of times a year I definitely feel intense mood swings due to hormones. I would be interested in making some smaller changes, or trying a “lite” version of the cyclical food habits to test their impact.

    But, living abroad… many of the supplements and specialty foods mentioned are pretty much impossible to come by, which does make me wonder how widely accessible the program can be, even within the US. I also believe strongly in food culture and heritage. My bond to – and love for! – certain dishes, ingredients, and culinary traditions makes it very difficult for me to embrace new, restrictive diets. Though nutrition and health are very important to me… so are food culture, tradition, and taste! (Ie. As a Frenchie, I could.never.give.up.cheese.)

    Anyway… super interesting, and lots of food for thought 😉 I can’t wait to do more research on her website!

  • You were 100% right about being so excited and passionate about this episode. THANK YOU! This is such an important topic! After dealing with infertility and such I became more educated about my body, but only half-assed really. I took better care and with more awareness, but I know I still can do better. I will admit I went and bought her book within the first 10 minutes of listening to this episode. I cannot wait to dive in and see the changes. I’d love if you could share with us later any changes and improvements in your body!

    Very interesting podcast. I almost went out to buy the book 10 minutes into the podcast as well, but was a little reluctant due to the restrictiveness of the diet. I am starting to get away from trying to control my body/weight through food and exercise (i.e. constantly dieting!) and am starting to delve into intuitive eating. I’m afraid that the diet part of this will not be good for me and my food issues. I’m wondering how you (Jess) feel about the restrictive diet aspect of eating for your flo since you have also struggled with food issues/weight management in the past. It was obvious from the podcast that you (understandably) don’t want to give up gluten and dairy! 🙂

  • I hear you, Kelly! I would go with your intuition on this when it comes to the eating portion. I am very grateful I’ve spent the last six years eating intuitively and I don’t honestly know how well I would have handled this approach when I was just making this switch from ego to intuition.

    I can say now I’m at a place personally in my life and eating where this is an appropriate time for me to try this approach for many reasons that you heard in the show (PCOS, hormone imbalance, trying to have children soon, etc). For me it’s not about a diet, it’s about opening up my life to include the things I just shared in the ( )’s.

    SO, I would say for you, go with your gut. And maybe, for now, just get used to not letting your ego control what you eat. Just know this information is here when/if you need it in the future.

    I hear you on the gluten + dairy! I avoided this information myself for over a year, partly for this reason. I’m personally, as you heard in the show, not a big fan of getting gluten and dairy out of my system because it’s a HUGE part of my favorite rituals (mac and cheese!!). However, as you’ve also heard about my story, I think it’s worth trying this approach for myself to see if it gives me access to a regular period, removing PCOS symptoms, and hopefully helping me have children in the future.

    That said, everyone is on their own path and have their own reactions to things. Some may not be affected as much, like she said. If people don’t have any PCOS (or that kind of thing) and have no PMS symptoms or trouble getting pregnant (if they want to), perhaps this isn’t necessary for them. Or, perhaps it’s something they are now aware of and can return back to later in their life, if they decide to give it a shot.

    Either way, I hope it’s helpful for everyone to know this approach exists so that they have the option to choose to try it in the future at some point if they decide they’d like to!

  • Awesome, Kim! My assistant here in Austin has been making changes to her diet to align with her blood sugar and has seen shifts by making slow, steady changes one month at a time, so the “lite” version of this would be a great place to start – and the book explains how. (She also did the 4 day kick start, too, which showed her how much better she’d feel if she decided to live this approach.) : )

    Though Alisa didn’t mention it in the show, she mentions in the book that it’s an 80/20 when it comes to doing/eating things that are hormone disruptive, and she shares ways to help your hormones recover faster after you eat things like your mom’s favorite pasta dish. So that too might be something to consider in terms of traditions.

    Such an important topic. I recently read Sara Gottfried’s The Hormone Cure, and her research is along the same lines. Very helpful in this stage of my life. I, too, and reluctant about gluten free and dairy free diets, but am realizing that if it helps me with all the hormonal issues I’m dealing with, it will be worth it. I’ve cut out caffeine and almost all sugar to help with insomnia, and now I think I’ve got to go ahead with gluten/dairy though I’m dragging my feet about it for the same reasons you were! I recommend Gottfried’s podcast called The Health Bridge, which she co-hosts with Pedram Shojai, who brings an Eastern medicine perspective to these important health conversations.

    Hi Jess – just wanted to pop in and say hi after this great podcast (sorry I have been quite lately but still listen to every podcast!!). I really love this podcast as I have been on a very big journey to wellness for over a year now (you may remember I mentioned it when I did your LWI course last year but then I went quite as I just found that life online had to take a back seat when turning life at home around). I have done lots of reading and listening about these topics so it is always great to hear it again from someone different – Alissa was easy to listen to and the topic is wonderful no matter what your age (I am now 47 so through the childbearing years but wish I had this info when I was having my kids). I went off wheat and dairy last year and while I now do have a little dairy every now and then it is not as hard as you think. Sadly the wheat that is produced in the current day is just so bad for us and causes so much inflammation and health issues – I understand people don’t like to hear it but once you find the replacements life changes and you will be amazed at how much better you feel!

    I really enjoyed this… since I am in recovery from an ED I have to worry about restricting myself from any food as it can lead to recurrence. For me there is a fine line to walk since I know limiting stuff like dairy, caffeine, gluten etc can be so helpful for mood/weight but could also send me into a crazy binge since I feel I am being restricted… but part of learning to have a healthy relationship with food requires listening to what your body wants, and a lot of the time our bodies don’t want dairy/caffeine/gluten. Mindfulness and intuitive thinking are at the heart of a healthy relationship with food and our bodies. Jessica Murnane recently had Isabel Foxen Duke on her podcast to talk about the diet/binge cycle and it was SO interesting and informative. She would be great to have on your show.

  • These are such great points, Julie! As someone who had an ED for 9 years myself, I hear you on the tricky balance when it comes to food restriction for ego vs. wellbeing… the line can get fuzzy or completely blurred at times if intuitive eating isn’t firmly in play.

    I also love your recommendation to have Isabel on the show – she’s actually coming on this fall right before Thanksgiving to discuss these issues right before the holidays begin. : )

    Hi Jess – the biggest key for me is having a really good menu plan in place the week before. My husband and I now have a breakfast ritual every morning and we do not waver from it and while you may think it is lots of work honestly once you have the system in place it is so easy as you don’t have to think! We have bacon, eggs, tomatoes and mushrooms on a bed of quinoa every morning. Every couple of days I make up a big batch of quinoa and it is there as our replacement to bread – a scoop in the bowl each morning and reheat. The night before we have the mushrooms, tomatoes and bacon portioned out in the fridge and all ready to pop straight in the pan and finally we just crack an egg into a poacher or a fry pan and in the same amount of time it takes to cook a piece of toast or make a bowl of cereal you have the best breakfast you will ever have and it keeps you going all day if you need it to!! Quinoa is my big tip as a swap out for wheat/bread and my swap out for dairy is either coconut water or almond milk (i make almond milk each week so it is ready to go as well). Because I have 3 kids and a busy schedule I will work out our weekly meal plan and just repeat it for the 4 weeks of the month – no stressing or worry about what is right or wrong as it is all there ready to go. After a month we have a new lot of meals although I admit a few things are there every week! Hope the move is going well!! Leanne x

    Hi Jess! Great episode. If you do try out Alisa’s program I would LOVE an update on your results. A lot of what you talked about rang true for my life, but I must admit I’m a bit of a skeptic. I bought and read a similar diet based approach to acne and it just didn’t work. I already eat pretty clean and normally avoid wheat and most dairy so I’m curious if this protocol would make any difference. It would be awesome to hear your testimonial.

    Jess, thank you for sharing this incredible information, your podcasts never disappoint. I too have struggled with PCOS since HS. For over two decades I have passively taken my birth control pill and accepted the fact that there was no other option. But two years ago I decided to take control of my body. I learned more about PCOS and looked for natural ways to regulate my mood swings, anxiety, depression, weight issues, food cravings, and blood sugar levels. Becoming a pescatarian was a major step in the right direction for me. Seeking the medical advice of a holistic practitioner was life changing and led to me going off the pill. Instead I take a daily herbal supplement: 150 mg of Chasteberry. I also started meditating daily and redefining what success and happiness means to me. Who would have ever thought that a simple over-the-counter herb and dietary changes could reverse my PCOS. I wish I had known sooner. I have wept for the lost years of my life. Thank you again for sharing Alisa’s information. It is truly empowering to understand how your body works and how best to care for it. I look forward to learning more about her methods and applying them in my life.

    Oh My Lord! I started this podcast on my way to work and by the time I was almost at my building I found myself running upstairs because I couldn’t wait to leave feedback for how AMAZING this information was and I couldn’t wait to shout from the mountaintops and tell all of my friends, family, and really, anyone with ovaries about what I learned and how they need to listen not only to this talk but to their bodies. This has been completely life changing.

    I’ve struggled with periods my entire life and just like most women, I was told ‘it’s okay. It’s because of sports. We don’t need to worry until you want to have kids.’ It was actually a combination of my intuition and my good old southern grandma who was like, ‘Something is wrong!’ I was diagnosed with PCOS 2 years ago and just having this information was a game changer. I finally had somewhat of an explanation. However, this talk was hands down the best gyno appointment that I’ve ever had. Someone was actually paying attention to me and my body and I was sitting on the CTA and I’m like, ‘OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! I can’t believe this.’

    Finally someone is cracking what has been going on in the background of my entire life. All of the restless nights, the depression, the acne, the trouble waking up, the over stimulated hormones, the cramps, and the headaches. I could go on and on but I am so happy that you did this interview! Alisa was fabulous and a wealth of information.

    Hmmm, so I’ve been binge listening to catch up this last week, and I have to say that this one was definitely not my favorite. I think it was the messenger more than the message, but I’m just hugely skeptical of people selling what amounts to overly simplified medical advice over the internet.

    I discovered you through Alisa as my studio is doing some graphic design for her, and as always we want to keep up with what our clients are up to, and I have to say, I’m now obsessed with your podcast and going on a binge. haha

    But staying on this episode’s topic, sounds like everything happens for a reason. As the first year of running my design studio with 8 people plus, I’ve experienced an increased level of stress and anxiety and very recently started having acne (which I never had in my life) mood swings and lost my period all together. This podcast really came at the right time not only to give me an extra push to finish reading Alisa’s book, but also to really start taking this seriously so that I don’t have more serious problems later.

  • I just wanted to give a small update since reading the book since a lot of people seemed put off about the no gluten and dairy or the diet itself.

    Alisa never forces you to give up anything. She suggests to try and see if you are sensitive to gluten and diary. And then seeing if these things are causing issues that you may not have realized.

    And the diet itself is pretty easy. She wants you to incorporate *more* of the foods she suggests to your existing diet. Let those foods be the main focus. And I’m really enjoying the diet! I’ve been eating a lot more variety! She also says you can have alcohol, but limit yourself, duh.

    The only thing I didn’t do was the 4 day detox, that was a bit too much for me at the moment. But I’ve been taking supplements to help cleanse my body.

    I’ve been binge-listening to your podcast since discovering it last week and this was a GREAT episode. For anyone skeptical about this approach to women’s health, it’s real and science-based. I know from experience — About 3 years ago, I happened upon the same information that Alisa discusses. I was 32 at the time, and after 18 months of trying to conceive, and working with my OBGYN to go on all sorts of fertility drugs, she said the next step would be in-vitro fertilization. I had that same gut feeling — it just didn’t seem right to me, that there was nothing else I could do or try before taking this lab-based, expensive route. I’ve been healthy my whole life and had fairly normal monthly cycles (but will lots of PMS which I now know is a symptom of hormone imbalance). Up until that time, I’d been on the pill for over 10 years but had zero knowledge of how it actually worked (ovulation suppression and no actual menstruation, just breakthrough bleeding). It’s still amazing to me how uneducated I let myself be about my own body.

    My friend, who works as a massage therapist in an integrative health center, suggested I try acupuncture. At the time, it sounded like she was suggesting voodoo — I was completely unconvinced that it had anything to do with fertility. But I decided to read as much as I could. I found an OBGYN who was also a licensed acupuncturist (jack pot!) and the combination of her 2 areas of study, and wealth of knowledge about women’s health and hormone wellness, was perfect.

    After only 2 months of acupuncture (specifically to treat a progesterone deficiency which she discovered through lab tests), and some very easy changes to my diet (exactly what Alissa described!), I conceived naturally and had a completely normal, healthy pregnancy (remember, this is 1.5 years after trying to conceive with absolutely no success). She took time to explain to me exactly what my issue was, and how acupuncture would help rectify it. (in case it helps, having low progesterone means your body won’t keep the lining of the uterus in place long enough, and you shed your lining — aka get your period — even if you have a fertilized egg embedded there.) I kept doing acupuncture throughout my pregnancy and had a very normal birth experience. Since then, I’ve stayed off the pill, and my monthly periods are PMS-free and regular.

    I didn’t know of Alissa at the time, and will definitely be reading her book. Here’s a book that guided me through the process of hormone balance through nutrition, specifically for fertility. It was INCREDIBLY helpful and, again, combines western and eastern medicine, which I really like. The title is goofy but it’s chock-full of helpful information and step-by-step plans to help woman naturally balance their hormones.     Big thank to Jess and Alisa for making more women aware of these options. I was a huge skeptic before being “desperate” enough to try this stuff myself, and it turns out that I just didn’t know how much I didn’t know! 🙂

    Hi Jess, I absolutely LOVE your podcasts and listen regularly. For some crazy reason, I didn’t download this episode when it came out. Serendipitously I’d downloaded it to listen to on my drive home from my acupuncturist on Thursday (I’m seeing her for unexplained fertility issues) and WOW – connections!

    I’m under a lot of stress in my work life and my acupuncturist is focusing on improving my liver function which is out of whack because of my stress levels and she believes that’s what’s causing our fertility problems (as physiologically we are both otherwise a-ok). It makes total sense how this is impacting on my hormones now I’ve listened to the podcast (and when I arrived home I immediately bought Alisa’s book and read it in two nights!). I can really see some connections with the issues I’m having in, especially in my luteal phase. I’m going to try out Alisa’s protocol and hope that with the acupuncture and these changes we can get pregnant without having to go down the pharmaceutical route.

    I’m 43 and I need to say to all the women out there in their teens, twenties and thirties (and to parents of young girls) please educate yourself and don’t wait on this information. I have endometriosis that wasn’t diagnosed until I found myself struggling to get pregnant in my early thirties. I had a period (‘scuse the pun!) in my early twenties while in college when my cycle completely reversed itself (bleeding for 3 weeks/not bleeding for five days). It lasted for almost a year and no-one could tell me what the heck was happening – other than putting me on pill after pill after pill to try and find the ‘right’ one that would ‘fix’ me. At every step I got the message I was broken, that something was wrong with me. Especially when I was trying to start a family. After rounds of Clomid and all kids of other things, I think I pretty much forced my body into pregnancy. I had multiple hospitalizations during that time, ending up on bed rest for the last 6 months of the pregnancy. Luckily I have a beautiful healthy ten yr old now 🙂 but the whole experience put me off and I sort of made the decision pretty soon after to not have any more children. I was also told with endo, after each surgery I’d have a small window to get pregnant again if I wanted to; the docs were telling me they were buying me time. Tick tock if I wanted to get pregnant again. Then my husband and I divorced and the idea of having more children pretty much went out the window. Although there were many things that contributed to the divorce, one of them was my total and utter lack of sex drive and pretty much hating my own body. So here I am today, listening to this information and desperately want to say to the younger community: please listen. It may sound somewhat hard (giving up all those yummy foods for one thing) but it might just be a lot easier than dealing with everything else 🙂 I would also recommend acupuncture to help with the flow and if they do to see if ‘blood stagnation’ is something that applies to them. Acupuncture has been a key to changing a lot in my life… this is the next key. BTW gluten free toast is actually pretty fab (try Udi’s – I find that’s a good one) and avocado toast is the BEST breakfast ever!!! I’ve been having that with my cup of peppermint green tea for breakfast for almost a year and things did shift… It’s just time to step it up now 🙂 Thank you Jess.     I am honestly a little teary eyed after reading your message. I can only imagine how difficult what you went through on this journey was without the proper information. Your story is also extremely encouraging for me, personally, and I have to second your vote for Udi’s bread!! I’ve tried another gluten free bread and Udi’s Chia bread was 10 times better in every way!

    Thank you again for sharing your story with us. I’m grateful you’ve found methods like acupuncture and this way of eating to help regulate your endocrine system as well. : )

    Jess, THANK YOU for not only doing this interview and sharing it with us all but also for sharing your experiences. My finding this blogcast was very timely for me on my personal journey this past year as I realize that I couldn’t blame my stressful corporate life on how I was feeling and reacting. Because I quit it all to move and start my own gig and ALL of those symptoms were still with me – eek. Time to look inward! From perimenopausal to on the brink of adrenal failure, some BIG questions have been answered and new questions realized as I learn to manage my hormones rather than rely on conventional “catch all” solutions provided by GPs and that there is so much we can do by paying attention to the signals. Having seen benefits from what I have already begun, this interview furthered my personal education. As soon as I got in the door from my morning walk “with you” I joined Alisa’s community, ordered her book and am so excited to check out her program.

    As always, I truly enjoy your interviews and the personal tone and messaging you bring to your sessions.
