okay i lied…
May 6th, 2011     |    Life

I said I wasn’t going to post today, and I am. Just want to stop in with a few nuggets.

For those of you who hate your jobs but haven’t taken action yet…

Here is something I wrote to a friend in a similar situation recently (hopefully it strikes home with you too):

I know that the job thing has been bothering you for a while. I feel like in a way you are pregnant with the idea that you need to do something else, but the definition of what that is is still hazy enough to stay inside you. Once you find it deep in your soul nothing will stop you from giving birth to it – be it a business(es), new job, whatever. Right now you are just in that third trimester of uncomfortableness – but that’s a good thing! It makes the giving birth part a whole lot easier because you are so unhappy and “fat” with the possibility that there is something new around the corner. Give it time, eventually life, God, and your next step will come from within you so strongly that you’ll be in labor before you know it and never look back! You can’t stuff a baby back inside once it wants to come out.

Have a lovely weekend! For those of you Chicago readers, tomorrow is the first weekend day of the outdoor Green City Market! I know where I’ll be grabbing my morning scone…

  • Thanks for making the comparison to being pregnant. It definitely works and I feel that way!! It’s nice to have something to compare the situation to. Have fun at Green City! It was pretty busy on Wednesday and everyone was happy to be back outside!

  • I like the “i lied” font.

    And your metaphor.

And that you linked to me.

    See you tonight, lady!

I’ve been “pregnant” for 3-4 years and don’t see a due date in sight. Yikes! Ha!

  • I absolutely love what you had to say to your friend – especially since it seems to ring true for me too. I’m quite intimidated and unsure of what my next step ought to be, but I am certain that it’s not at the job I’m currently at. Thanks Jess for your words of wisdom!

  • I really like the pregnancy metaphor! I have been feeling ‘antsy’ to take action in some way and your description of that feeling fits so perfectly. It also reminds me that at the right time, it will come together and it (whatever “it” is) will be born. Just because I’m uncomfortable right now, doesn’t mean it has to happen now, now, now…but at the right time it will.

  • Great post and very inspiring. Thanks for sharing it.

Perfectly said! LOVE this–and Yes, I am in the third trimester and feel for you friend because I know how she feels–however, I so so look forward to “giving birth”!

  • I love what you said about the jobs thing. My husband and I lived there for so long…in some ways we are still there…and because our dream is so hazy it doesn’t feel real or OK. People ask us what we want to do and we’re not EXACTLY sure, so it’s hard to convey. There is definitely a baby there, but we’re not sure if it’s a boy or a girl or how it will all play out. 🙂

Love this! I just gave “birth”! I found the Dream Job/Once in a lifetime Opportunity …that anyone with a glass half full personality can do too 🙂 Email me if you would like details francescag.myrandf@gmail.com

  • Words of wisdom at the right time! Thank you!

  • I loved your analogy, and it can also be applied to other areas of life as well, to any change that you feel stirring inside of you. Most of the time we sense the coming change far before we are ready to act on it.
