summer home updates

June 22nd, 2011   |   Style

Since the last photos were taken of my living room and bedroom, I’ve made some summer updates to my apartment.

Given the warmer weather and my evolving sense of style, I’ve chosen to go with brighter pops of color. Some of these colors and trends are even making their way into upcoming collections as well…

An ice bucket and wine rack from the thrift store, acrylic tray from CB2, and my favorite chevron decanter from Cathy round out a pretty little spot for drinks.

Since the first living room photos, my old sea foam living room rug has bit the dust. It discolored, wore out, and got red wine stains. So in came this gray little number from Rugs USA which brightens the whole space. The blue pillow caught my eye at Pier One. After obsessing about the pillow for a few weeks I finally caved and bought it.

A discounted aqua tray from TJ Maxx is the perfect way to carry barbecue goods to the patio.

Mr. Lively’s favorite candle scent I’ve ever had, Firewood by C.O Bigelow.

I obsessed over this Pottery Barn duvet for months and finally ordered it. If it’s good enough for Sarah and Diane, it’s good enough for me. I love it.

My new favorite scarf found for $16 at TJ Maxx.

  • the duvet looks perfect (and thanks for the shoutout)! also love the new gray rug, it goes wonderfully

  • Amazing scarf!

  • I’m glad you’re still loving the decanter! And your bedroom looks so fresh!

  • I have been eyeing that rug on rugsusa….it look beautiful in your place! how is the quality?

  • I have a couch in the same style/color as yours and I’ve been debating if it would look good with a gray rug — and now I know it will because yours looks fabulous! Is yours the charcoal color? It looks dark on the Rugs USA site. I’d also like to know how the quality is.

  • Thanks ladies!

Cindy and Laura, I’m certainly no rug expert, but so far I’ve been really pleased with the rug (I’ve had it since April, so not too long). The only thing I’ve noticed is that it can pill over time, so I am sure to vacuum it once a week. 🙂

  • Beautiful colors!!!

  • That scarf makes me wish it wasn’t 99 degrees here . . .

  • Oh I just *love* to “winterize” or add a summer feel to my home with the changing seasons.

    Your duvet looks great!

During summertime, I go for creams and off-whites as colors, canvas and linen as textures. I hang lightweignt white curtains in the bedroom instead of heavy velvet drapes, and i cover my dark brown velvet couch with an off white textured canvas slipcover (sewn by my mom).

We all need a pop of color, so I go for mustard, chartreuse and lime on my silk pillows and cotton plaid. A weekly bouquet add a fresh note and adds a nice scent to the room.

  • What a bright and cheerful home you have! I really love your use of color…and I can see it translating into your jewelry pieces! We’ve made some changes to our home recently too…some new IKEA finds and I’ve been reupholstering a set of Craigslist dining room chairs with a fun Alexander Henry fabric. My husband and I are branching out and using more color and I’m really loving it.

  • Love the duvet but those sheets! wow. I need, yes, “need” new bedding! lol you’ve inspired me to add some color and pattern.

I LOVE your blog and especially your style! It is so bright and happy. I don’t comment on blogs often but I was going through my pinterest boards and noticed a bunch link back to your blog…so I had to check it out! I do have a question for you though on your rug. Do you remember if the color was called “charcoal” on their website? I love the grey look of yours and the charcoal is the closest I could find. Thanks!

  • Hi Jordan, yes the rug is charcoal I believe : ).
