i’m saying “want to”

This last two weeks has been a whirlwind! Like most people, I have been busier this holiday season than ever before. While wrapping up the holiday orders for Jess LC and celebrating the with friends and Mr. Lively, I have had the opportunity of a lifetime come my way.

Tomorrow I will be flying out to New York to shoot a segment with Mr. Nate Berkus on The Nate Show.

Totally insane, right? While I can’t get into details, I can say that the segment will come on sometime in February. And when it airs, I’ll be sure to let you all know the details.

But let’s just say that this 36 hour trip to NYC falling right on the last week four day week of holiday selling for the year more than hectic. There are a million things to wrap up here in the shop, we have our Jess LC holiday party this evening, I have to make a trip to our new manufacturer for the iPad cases, and I need to prepare for the holiday break as well as get all the last orders out the door by Thursday.

It’s enough to make my head spin.

And after noticing my thoughts turn from want to’s to have to’s quicker than the temperature is dropping, I am taking a stand.

For the rest of this week, I intend to use the words want to regarding everything that needs to get done between now and my flight to Philly to see my family on Friday.

Though my to-do list will not be shortened one iota with this line of thinking, I refuse to allow myself to go have an incredibly great experience in New York while grumbling about everything else. I don’t want to look back on this week and think about how I murmured my way through.

I want to reflect back and think about that wonderful time during the holidays that I got to go on TV while still getting all of my other intentions completed cheerfully.

I think that’s something we all can remember right now as things get a little out of hand before some much needed time off.

Congrats, Jess! That’s amazing! I’m finding myself in a similar situation (though I’m sure not as busy as you!), but your reminder to say yes and be thankful for the opportunities, even though the timing may not be ideal is really helpful. I can’t wait to see the segment in February!

    Congrats — so exciting!!

This is something I definitely want to keep in mind — thanks for the reminder! I’ve been so busy lately that I’ve been letting my to-do list drag me down instead of being excited about it.

  17. What an awesome opportunity! There are lots of things that I want to do this week as well. Trying to remember that I want to do them instead of stressing, so I’m right there with you. Took the week off blogging though to not pile my plate too high.

    Congratulations! What a great opportunity!

Just a gentle reminder, Jess…while I’m happy to know you are busy and that your businesses are doing so well, it might also be good to remember that there are other small businesses that would love to have the free advertisement AND customer orders to fill especially during this time of year.

With the current poor economic conditions, you are fortunate and blessed. Not only say “I want to” but thank God for being is such a great position.

    Congrats, congrats, congrats!! So exciting!

Thank you so much everyone for your support and encouragement the whole way through!!

Monique, thank you so much for your kind words!

Please believe me when I say that I completely understand that many people would love to be in this blessed position (in fact, I feel that way myself), and that I understand that not every business is thriving this time of year in this economic climate. I referred to people being busy this time of year in all aspects of life, juggling the holidays, career (small business or otherwise), and family/vacation time – it can be hectic and stressful for people.

As far as struggling goes, I myself having built my company from scratch full-time through 2008 and 2009 know the slow business side very well. I have struggled, grown, and prospered over the years and I believe that the best thing I can do to help others is to share what I’ve learned on MML and to help them know that it is possible to have a positive life with intention. That’s the purpose of MML in general – as I mentioned last week, I am working hard to share the blessings that are coming my way after twelve years of perseverance, and not just the obstacles.

That being said, I also am happy that I can honestly share how things are going for me, and actually admit that this has been a stressful week for me in which at many points, I have been close to breaking down in tears. It is stressful to have so much on my plate, and that is something that I never imagined for myself while working so hard to expand my business to this place. I wish that I had someone to honestly and openly talk about the challenges that come on the lack and abundant sides of business. In fact, that’s what this post is all about – I do not want to live a more prosperous life in which I’m stressed out by blessings! Which is why I’m working on my own self-talk about wanting to do things rather than having to do things. Had I known that more business and incredible opportunities could lead to different, but equally stressful feelings towards the business, I may have cut myself a little more slack when the tears started coming despite positive things in my life.

I’ve had panic attacks about cash flow and making ends meet and this week I almost had one because there was so much to do in such little time. Both made me feel the same way, scared and worried. They just came from different ends of a spectrum.

And please believe me when I say, I am an incredibly spiritual person and I have relied on God to guide me this whole way and I’m doing my best to fulfill my purpose and give thanks.
