TLS #67: Values, Mindset, Business, & Parenthood with Pat Flynn (Smart Passive Income)

Today is the 1st Anniversary Special and season 1 finale for The Lively Show!

And I have the perfect guest to celebrate with.

Today’s guest is Pat Flynn, an incredibly genuine and successful business owner with a blog and podcast called Smart Passive Income.

Pat owns several companies, and documents his business successes and failures on his blog each month.

In this episode, we talk about the mindset shifts and personal habit changes he’s made from when he got laid off from his architecture job in 2008, to today, where he regularly earns around $100,000 per month(!).

We also discuss his business Values, personal life Values, and how he prioritizes his wife and children.

This episode is perfect for anyone who is looking to design a career based on their Values, or wants to learn from someone who has achieved massive success personally and financially while staying grounded along the way.

  • How getting laid off from his first architecture job eventually led to an unusual entrepreneurial start.
  • How Pat launched his first product and earned almost $8,000.00 in the first month.
  • The mindset shifts that Pat has made from getting laid off to earning up to $100,000 per month.
  • What Pat would tell himself back in 2008 to get himself prepared for the journey and abundance that was headed his way.
  • The why (or Values-based intention) behind Pat’s business that creates the incredible amount of earnings that he has, and also helps him determine which opportunities to say no to.
  • The boundaries that Pat sets for his career so it doesn’t overshadow his relationship with his wife or children.
  • How Pat handles the limiting beliefs around not “deserving” so much financial success.
  • The personal habit shifts that Pat has made, including his morning rituals that have allowed him to spend less time in his career and still get more work done.
  • What Pat would say to those just starting out on this journey.

  3. Congratulations again Jess on your 1 year anniversary, and I’m honored that I was there to help celebrate! Thank you for the opportunity to share my story with your audience!

    1. Thank you so much, Pat! It was awesome to have you on the show (and psst…. you’re going to be getting something a little unexpected from Amazon next week. ; ) )

  4. I’ve already listened to this show twice! I’ve been following Pat Flynn for awhile – and I love your work Jess. It was great to have both of you on one podcast. I’m truly inspired – and even more motivated knowing that it is possible to create the ideal business and home life.

    1. That’s so great to hear, lady!! I’m glad you enjoyed it and are a Flynnatic, too. : )

  5. My two favourite show hosts together – what a treat. Thanks Jess and Pat for continuing to provide enlightening advice, guests and material – it truly inspires, motivates and informs me to live a mindful and full life of intention.

Congratulations on your one year anniversary! Love your show and can’t wait for Season 2!

  7. Chatty

congratulations Jess! Thanks for this Pat 🙂 sending my virtual hug to you guys all the way from the Philippines 🙂

  8. Jess, CONGRATS on finishing your first season! I know I’ll miss the show while you’re gone, but I’m super proud that you’re taking time for yourself and know that whatever you do next will be that much more amazing. You have to enjoy the ride!

This was a really amazing episode. I’m starting my own podcast very much inspired by you, Jess, and I have a newfound appreciation for all that you do, and your amazing skill at interviewing and composing these episodes. You’ve been incredible at it from the get go and make it look far easier than it really is 🙂

Thanks Pat for sharing so openly. It really resonated when you said that you now lean in toward fear. I think I similarly spent a lot of my childhood living on the fray, so that’s something I still haven’t got a handle on entirely. But I’m learning, and with practice I know that when I do just go for it, 100% of the time I either fail and learn something or succeed and am grateful I launched into it rather than staying in the fray.

    Cheers to you both,

    1. Yay, I’m so glad you enjoyed the show, Linds! And I hear you, podcasting (depending on how you approach it) can be a lot of hard work! But I have found it gets easier (but not always less time consuming) as you go along. : )

  9. Jess, I love Pat Flynn, I’ve been listening to him for ages He’s always so positive and humble and straight to the point. But more importantly, congrats on your first season 😀 !!!! *throws confetti* Your show is SUCH an inspiration for me, I often go back to listen to past shows when I’m feeling like I’m loosing touch of my intentions. I think your time off is quite well deserved 😉 I hope you enjoy it!!

Hi, Jess. I have been enjoying the Lively Show podcasts. Always an inspiration. I do have a question though…have you stopped blogging (at least in the format you used to?) I have been following your blog since the MakeUnderMyLife days when you had lots of varied content and different contributors. I was busy with school last year so I kind-of fell out of the loop with blogs. I went to look for your home tours too and couldn’t find them on the site. Just wondering if I missed something…like your explaining this new approach 🙂

    1. Great questions!

Based on the crazy positive feedback I got from switching to a Tuesday episode on my own vs. a traditional written post, I have informally “stopped” blogging and doing them verbally through the Tuesday episodes instead. You can see them all on the blog tab (alternating with the Thursday shows) and you can find them on iTunes, too.

As far as home tours and previous posts from the blog as it was before, they are all still in the archives (

Is there a specific tour you were looking for? I also share shots from our Austin home on

  11. Ali Edwards

Jess – you rock. You are making a difference in what you do and spreading good. Take the break you need and OWN it. Loved this episode and will happily wait while you fill yourself up :). Go team!

    1. Thank you so much, Ali! This means a lot to me. You are such an incredible, grounded encourager and I appreciate it so much. : )

  12. Deirdre Keating

Congratulations, Jess, on your 1st anniversary! I’m SO missing your weekly podcast—especially your mini-podcasts of just you. I just stopped by to see if there was an update. Looking forward to hearing how the class went this time & hearing more from you!

    1. Thank you so much for listening, Deirdre! I’m so glad you are enjoying the show and miss the episodes with just me, too. If you are on Instagram, you may like to follow me there since I’ve been adding mini updates along the way.

BUT the good news is that Season 2 is coming up on April 2nd!! I have tons of new episodes already recorded and ready to start launching that I can’t wait to share with you. : )
