TLS #118: Proactively Parenting With An Entrepreneurial Mindset with Pat Flynn

Today on The Lively Show we have one of our first repeat guests, Pat Flynn, of the Smart Passive Income podcast.

I’ve been a HUGE fan of Pat and his show for years now, and today we’re diving into a topic he hasn’t shared much about: the creative and entrepreneurial mindsets he’s deliberately exposing his children to as they develop.

In addition, we’re also discussing the topic of his new book, Will It Fly?, which addresses ways that we can validate and test potential business ideas to determine whether they would be financially successful before we invest a lot of our time and money.

This episode is perfect for anyone who is interested in ways to expose children to a creative or entrepreneurial mindset, or is interested in learning about how to test business ideas before investing a lot of time and money.

  • Pat tells us about how he instills the proper focus and mindset on his children so they can be more successful in what they do.

  • He tells us about how his parenting style helps his children learn by discovery and mistakes to grow up in a mindful way.

  • Pat tells us the story how school children can be guided to become problem solvers with real-life applications.

  • He tells us the reason he wrote the book Will It Fly and how it can help entrepreneurs move forward with their business.

  • Pat tells us about the two different type of validations in business, especially the “business to self” validation to see if your idea will fit into your life’s goals and direction.

  • He describes that being in alignment with your business idea personally is the goal to being happy as well.

  • Pat talks about the various exercises in the book which help determine if your business idea has merit and if it is a good idea for you.

  • He tells us which of his “superpowers” he would use to sell himself on TV’s Shark Tank if he had the opportunity.

  • Pat reassures us that we need to believe in ourselves and embrace our differences to stand out from the crowd.

i discovered pat when you had him on the show the first time, and have been following ever since. i really enjoyed this episode and just pre-ordered the book!

  2. Hey Jess, great interview with Pat! He’s one of my all time favorite people to listen to for advice on business and life. I really appreciate his openness and willingness to share from his life with such authenticity.

  3. Hi Jess. Thank you for another great interview. Pat mentioned a little exercise to go along with the airport test. It was imagining yourself in five years, folding a piece of paper into quadrants, labelling each section with the four key areas of your life and then completing each section with what would make you happy in those areas of life. I’m wondering what your thoughts are on this and if you have another exercise similar to recommend. I’m looking for a simple, yet effective way to help my husband get clear on career. Thanks so much! Amanda – Vancouver, Canada.

    1. Hi Amanda, thanks for my thoughts on this! Personally, this is an interesting exercise and if you feel it’s a fit for you, go for it! I personally prefer to think of my Values-based intentions and don’t spend a ton of time planning my future that far out as much as I’m personally more interested in listening and following my intuition in the present moment. But that’s just me. If you’re interested in more about this approach, feel free to sign up for updates about — that’s where I go more in depth about this approach. : )
