please don’t waste this moment

For those who find themselves in an unpleasant situation at work, in relationships, or elsewhere in life, I have one loving request:

Please don’t waste this moment.

I know it can be difficult (or downright impossible) to be in a situation that doesn’t feel great. One that doesn’t allow us to reach our full potential or tap into our talents.

But that is not an invitation for us to retract and give less than our best. To ignore what we can give and can share with others.

In the long term we all have the ability to create the lives we want. The short term is where motivation can often be most challenging when faced with difficult circumstances.

Being in a less-than-ideal situation for the next week, month, or year makes it tempting to simply retract and purposefully hold back our most sincere efforts.

But the truth is: withholding our talents, energy, and love does us the most harm.

Though the people around us are sure to be affected by our lack of effort, we feel the most pain.

We feel pain when we see ourselves mentally check out when things don’t go our way. We feel pain when we don’t choose to react in a proactive manner. We feel pain when we put in less of ourselves into our present reality.

Though the pain may not be palpable all the time, it builds and lingers.

Doubts begin to creep in.

Our self-confidence begins to erode.

Because deep down we know we are capable of great things. Even in difficult circumstances.

We know we can rise above the present challenge and produce better results or serve more truly.

As we consciously avoid putting forth our full effort we lose our joy and peace.

We begin to see that we are living a less-full life based on an external circumstances, rather than our internal compass.

So please, take the difficulty of the present moment and give it your most powerful and love-filled effort.

Rise above – for yourself as much as for others.

Thank you, Jess! This was just the reminder I needed today to push me to keep searching for a job and to not get discouraged!

Well said. It’s too easy sometimes to just give up.

Thank you- I needed somebody to tell me this. I’ve been in a job that doesn’t fulfill me for a long time, and it has entriely affected how I view myself and my opportunities. For a long time I thought I was in this situation because I wasn’t good enough for something better. I’ve done a lot of work over the past two years, and so I know that’s not true. But maybe I hadn’t understood how my attittude to my 9-5 situation undoubtable contributes a negative energy that reflects upon other areas in my life. If I don’t apply myself, and behave proactively to the situation, I only do myself a disservice.

Thank you so much for your story and for being so candid! I am so excited to see where this new realization takes you from here!

Thank you for this reminder. I want to be in a position where I can work from home SO badly. While I’m doing my best to figure out how to make it happen, I can get frustrated so easily that I’m not doing that now. And, as you said, self-doubt begins to surface. I have to remember not to let external factors dictate my happiness because true happiness comes from within. Even though I may not be where I want to be right now, that’s no excuse not to be happy anyway.

I totally agree! I have a close friend who also wants to work from home too.

It’s tough, but giving your best to the moment you have will make the in between time much more enjoyable for you and could somehow lead to the work from home experience you want!

This really holds a spot in my heart. I realized this probably a month ago and have been working on changes in my life to help me deal with the situations that I am ready to get out of. There are people that keep questioning why I started trying so hard since I still get over looked. They are in the same sort of situation and have been for longer, They said it doesn’t get better so why try? I don’t ever know how to respond but you are so right. I am hurting ME more than anyone by not giving my all. The world will never give back to me it’s all if it doesn’t see me giving my all first. One day, someone will see me trying and they WILL pay attention. I don’t need recognition now if I know that all the little effort now will make a difference one day. Thank you so much for sharing.

  12. Love this. I’m definitely trying to “rise above” in dealing with a personal situation. I’m not going to let it drag me down or doubt myself. Good stuff, Jess!
