ShouldIKeepOrReturnThisRugToday on Wineday Friday, I need your advice on whether I should keep or return this new gray clover patterned rug.

I got it on RugsUSA for the dining table, but it was way too overpowering when paired with the striped living room rug and entryway patterned rug. So instead, I have been testing it out in the bedroom.

GrayWhiteRugOn its own, it’s not too bad. I like the pattern and the quality is great.

However, I am not so sure about whether it takes away from the specialness of the wallpaper and makes things a bit too “crazy.”

RugInBedroomBy the way, I am also replacing the gray blanket and striped sheets which, after three years of constant use, have seen better days. I’ll be going much more neutral – maybe all white or something soothing and simple (and easily bleached/cleaned).

Meanwhile, I put the old bedroom rug, a lovely light gray one from my previous apartment, in the writing room.

I not sure if my eyes are simply adjusting to the new dark gray rug in the bedroom, or if it really is a good fit, once I have new bedding.

What do you think? Should I keep or return the dark gray bedroom rug?

Thank you so much for reading and have a great weekend!

I think it’s gorgeous but a bit too busy with the wallpaper. The grey rug is perfect for the bedroom!

Agreed. I’ll be replacing it – though I’m not sure the old grey rug will be making a reappearance, I kinda like the idea of a new guy in there – just more subtle than this one.

  2. I like it — but I don’t like it in the bedroom. With that wallpaper, I’d do a fine-scale stripe, but this particular rug is competing big-time with the wallpaper. It’s too big of a print.

    1. Jess Lively

I really like your idea of a fine-scale stripe! We have a bold rugby pattern in the living room, but a finer pattern in the bedroom would be nice!

return. its gorgeous, but it doesn’t work with the rest of the home.

  4. Gigi

I love the rug with the wallpaper, but not with those curtains.

    1. Jess Lively

You are very right. With the curtains (that I love), the rug doesn’t belong. But if I had chosen a neutral curtain, I think it would be really nice.

Return it. I agree that the print is too big to have with the wallpaper. It is a gorgeous rug, though!

The rug and wallpaper seem to be competing for attention. That wallpaper is phenomenal, and while the rug is nice, I’d prefer focus on the wallpaper. Something neutral on the floor would work better.

    1. Jess Lively

Exactly. That’s what I’ll be looking for next.

Have you thought about switching the two bedroom rugs? I know you may be tired of the gray one (hence why it’s in the guest room), but the dark rug would pop off the art frame and echo the nightstand.

    1. Jess Lively

That is a really interesting idea! I am leaning towards no on that because I looove the girly-ness of the guest room and how light/bright it is. I think the rug in there would tone it all down and make it more neutral – but a bit less “me.”

I agree that it’s probably too busy. It’s a shame; I’ve been looking for something like that for my living room! If only you lived closer 😉

    1. Jess Lively

Well, my friend, I gotta send it somewhere – if you want it that’s just as easy as sending it back to the store… text me and let me know if you want to get it from me – I got it 45% off.

    1. Jess Lively

Exactly. It’s not really me. I think it looks nice, and I think I was a little lazy and hoping that it could just work there so I didn’t have to send it back. But back it will go!

Thanks for sharing the room on ABM, too! Pretty!

    1. Jess Lively

Thanks, Maureen! My eyes, after a few days, have gotten used to it and started to like it a bit more, too. However, I think with the bright blue curtains it is a bit too much.

I feel like if you have to ask, you know the answer.
(I say do not keep in that space.)

    1. Jess Lively

Yeah. Normally I’m really confident about design decisions. This one was a bit of wishful thinking — hoping that I wouldn’t have to return it and could repurpose it. Nope.

  10. MeganS

It’s a lovely rug, but it def competes with the amazing wallpaper. I’d go with a solid/textured rug in there in a neutral shade or a color that doesn’t fight with the gorgeous blue curtains.

  11. Jess Lively

I haven’t done it yet… but I plan to! Either way I think the rug’s going to be returned, but we have talked about trying out the white bedding in the guest room in the master before we purchase the nicer quality items for the bed.

And yes, the curtains match the shoes – good eye!

I agree with everyone else. I love it and I think it would be great if the wallpaper wasn’t up, but it takes my attention away from the wallpaper, which is just too beautiful not to look at. 😉 Also, where did you get your blue curtains? I have been having the hardest time finding bright curtains that aren’t $$$$$!

    1. Jess Lively

Thanks! They are custom – I found the velvet at a fabric store and had them made by my dry cleaner/tailor. : )

      1. Natalie | Natalie Dressed

Well, they are beautiful. Smart idea – I may have to do that! Thanks, Jess. 🙂

        1. Jess Lively

For sure. Just find someone you trust that can do a simple pocket like that and you are all set! Or, you could use those little clippy rings.

I’m going to agree with everyone else and say probably not in this room- I’d go for a solid color rug in a lighter color or a really textured light rug.

that wallpaper is outstanding…..I think a more muted rug would be so pretty….
