the quest for the perfect gold shoe

PerfectGoldShoe

Guys, today’s Wineday Friday is pretty serious.

(At least it’s serious as far as Wineday Friday’s are concerned.)

Last week while Mr. Lively and I were visiting Boston we walked around in the rain for several hours and my lovely and comfortable Target sequin flats shown above were ruined. They were in such bad shape that they didn’t ever dry out properly and they got trashed before we flew home.

I am super sad about this because these puppies are were my go-to shoe 80% of the time and I’m having a hard time finding another pair to replace them.

I spotted a more expensive glitter pair at J.Crew, but I’m not thrilled at prospect of paying 400% more than I paid for the Target shoes when they have glitter and may not even turn out to be as comfy as the cheap pair. I also noticed a leather ballet flat option on the J.Crew Factory site which I liked – but my size is sold out (8.5).

I’ve done searches on Target (I’m not a fan of their updated gem-y version of these shoes), Piperlime, and Pinterest to no avail. I can’t seem to find the perfect flat gold show for fall and winter.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions for me? I’m all ears!

Thank you so much for reading. I hope you have a great weekend!

PS – I’d like to thank Blair for helping me re-design the new sidebar. Site update #47,324 is now complete!

    1. Thank you, Julie! I really like these – especially the last pair that has the most similar sequin look to my old pair. (I only wish they didn’t have the woven straw at the bottom which isn’t very fall/winter.) Thank you!

I am going to have to do some more research on Ebay and Amazon. I hope you have a great weekend!

    1. You my friend, are trouble! I am now contemplating like 7 handbags on BR now that I’m on their site. : )

Oh, and the shoes are cute too! I just wish they had it in a more gold tone.

    1. Lol. Yes, I don’t have many ruined shoes from Franklin, but Apple products on the other hand… ; )

And thank you again, my dear! I love it!!!!

  1. Eva Mijes

I am so sorry to hear that! I got these shoes after I saw them on your blog and I LOVE them! I don’t wear them often because I am afraid they will get ruined. Also, I always get complements on them! I am sorry I didn’t get an extra pair and also in other colors! I hope some of the links other commenters shared work out for you…. I am looking at them too. Good luck!

    1. I know, I wish I had bought 2 extra pairs back when they had them. I’m crossing my fingers and hoping that they have them back this holiday…

I was going to suggest the same. While a totally different price point, I’ve heard nothing but great things about Tieks. I know they have a metallic gold version. I keep thinking about getting a navy pair.

      1. Thanks! Do you have them? Do you find them crazy comfortable (like you could wear them all day and walk around for several miles?).

    2. Thanks! You are the first of 3 people who have mentioned that to me now!

I’m a bit unsure of the bright teal bottoms… do you have them? Do you notice the bottom more than the top color? Since I want gold, I’m not sure if they are going to look classy or less classy with the mix of the bold color and gold shimmer.

      1. Ashley Laabs

I have read a lot of reviews about them and am saving up for a navy pair, but no I don’t have any yet. I have heard nothing but good things, especially about their customer service. If you end up hating the teal bottoms you should have absolutely no issue returning them. They even go so far as to include a handwritten note of thanks with each order, which I think is extremely sweet. Each pair is made with Italian leather and takes 3 days to make according to their company materials. It seems like a very intentional company that would fall in line with your values…so you should expect a superior product for the price.

As for my opinion on the bottom, does anything look less classy with a red sole from Christian Louboutin? Nah, just a fun detail. That’s how I think about the flats. But again, if you have an issue you’ll have no problem resolving it with them.

You’ll at least have a pair that will be comfortable, easy to stow away for formal events, and can easily withstand a little rain 🙂

        1. Thanks for the background and extra info, Ashley! You’re dead on with the CL red sole… I will consider them if I can’t end up finding a different option that looks a bit better. For some reason I’m hoping to find a pair that has some extra little detail, be that sequins, a ballerina style with a small bow… etc. Not sure, but I have a feeling my gut will know when it sees it! Or, it might end up coming back to these, they were the most recommended for sure here in the post comments!

          1. Ashley Laabs

Well I have no doubt we’ll hear about the verdict. Good luck with the search!

          2. Jess Lively

For sure! Right now I’m not 100% sold on any, but about 5 are in the running. : )

      2. Ashley Laabs

Also, the blue sole is a bit inset from the front of the shoe. If you look at the profile you’ll see that there are actually 2 layers to the sole that makes the blue less noticeable.

  2. Eva Mijes

I know you asked for gold, but I got these and they are pretty comfy. They run small so you might have to get them a size bigger. (Leopard is the new neutral 😉 )

Hope the link works… if not here is the name: Women’s Mossimo Supply Co. Ona Side Scrunch Ballet Flat – Animal Print

    1. Thanks for sharing, Eva! I’d totally consider those if I didn’t already have a leopard pair. : )

    1. Thank you for the suggestions. I LOVE the sole society one but need a warmer/solid shoe for the fall and winter. The DSW page was looking really promising though – I might hop over there in person this weekend. Thank you!

Always check out Amazon. I bought some super cheap flats from there on a whim, and they turned out to be a great choice. If you can’t find the glitter your heart desires, grab a cheap pair and modge-podge some on! I’ve seen some great tutorials around the internet for that.

    1. I never thought to look at Amazon. Thanks for the suggestion!

(As far as glitter… I think I’d prefer sequins for durability, but then again, others have mentioned that glitter doesn’t rub off as I think it might.)

      1. Ashley Laabs

You can always put clear nail polish over glitter or buy a spray sealant, too.

        1. So true. Not sure I am looking to go through the extra steps vs. find a pair that doesn’t need it. But especially if I go for the glitter J.Crew pair, I’d spend the extra time to make that glitter stick!

  4. Those are cute! You’ve had them for a year, that’s awesome to hear. Do you wear them all the time? Do they seem durable enough to last all the time?

  5. Really! Are they comfortable? / Can you wear them around the city all day and not feel uncomfortable?

    1. Melissa

Absolutely! The soles feel more solid than most fold-up flats and they go with everything. If you’re interested in them, I hope your size comes back in stock!

      1. Melissa

Just realized my comment made it sound like the J.Crew shoes are fold-ups, but they are not…. which makes them feel more supportive/comfortable.

        1. Oh, gotcha. So you have the gold leather pair? I have that pair in black from the Factory and love them… I am crossing my fingers that the gold ones come back in stock!

  6. Natalie | Natalie Dressed

Those are the ones I was going to suggest! 🙂

  7. Callie

Do yours shed glitter everywhere? I have the wedge version and I seem to leave little glitter bits everywhere I go, but I still love the look enough to consider the flats.

    1. Melissa

Oh, the J.Crew ones don’t have glitter — they’re just gold, so there’s nothing to shed/rub off 🙂

  8. Allie K

I have 2 (well, 3 great options)! I have worn these:

http://www.amazon.com/Kenneth-Cole-REACTION-Womens-Ballet/dp/B00303F79S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1381518932&sr=8-2&keywords=kenneth+cole+flats almost every day since last Christmas and they’re still holdin up. They’re not really gold, they’re definitely pewter (color pictured is spot on) but I found them in light gold: http://www.amazon.com/Kenneth-Cole-REACTION-Slip-On/dp/B006EF5Q3Q/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1381519057&sr=8-2&keywords=kenneth+cole+gold+flats. Free shipping and under $50 in your size!

I think these may be my fave though: http://www.amazon.com/Lucky-Womens-Ballet-Tribal-Zigzag/dp/B00AY8CG4G/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1381519002&sr=8-3&keywords=lucky+flats This is taking you to a weird pattern but click “Prosecco”. I have these shoes in a cream and brown/gray/tan snakeskin and love them. Also a good price! I think I may need the Prosecco ones come to think of it…

    1. Thank you so much! These are great (especially that third option!). By far the most similar two options to the existing pair of flats. : )

  9. Kaitlyn

I got mine at H&M – they always have great flats and they’re very comfy!

    1. I haven’t been there in so long. Next time I’m on Michigan Ave I’m going to check it out. I have always been a bit wary of H&M shoes since I got red heels there a few years back and never found them super comfy.

Then again, I don’t find most heels super comfy. : )

My go-to places for shoes are DSW, Famous Footwear, and Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse. If I can’t find something there, I assume it doesn’t exist! Good luck and I hope you find the perfect pair!

    1. Thanks! I checked DSW this weekend in Chicago and didn’t find any – too many boots and booties in that inventory and not enough gold flats. Oh well, back to the drawing board. : )

    1. Those are cute! I went to Gap to see them and try them on but they didn’t have them in gold.

I’ve been thinking about that slipper cut… my only hesitation is I am not that confident that I’d end up wearing them with skirts as much as I would wear them with pants.

Maybe they’ll be in stock to try on in the store sometime soon. : ) Thanks, hun!

    1. Thank you, LaShanta! That third pair is definitely in the top 3 of all the shoes listed!! : )

    1. Thank you so much, Ali! I am going to NYC tomorrow so I’ll stop in an AE store and check them out in person if I have a chance. : )

  11. Katie

YES! BCBG is selling a pair of their gorgeous gold flats (for about $20-$30) on clearance at DSW Shoe Warehouse. I LOVE mine (bought for my summer honeymoon last winter). Walking in them all day for a week – and so comfy!

    1. That is so awesome! I was at my DSW in Chicago a week or so ago and didn’t spot them. But if I am still having trouble finding a good pair I will keep that recommendation in mind! Thank you.

    1. Those are realllllly cute! I wonder how comfy they are. They remind me of a pair I have in black from J.Crew Factory which are great, but don’t come in my size currently. Thank you!

    1. Thank you, Olivia! Of all the shoes sent my way, these look the most similar to the ones I had before overall (or at least with the features I’m looking for). So they are at the top of my list!

The mom I used to nanny for had the original Stuart Weitzman flats that Target made the “affordable” version of… The Stuarts are obviously GORGEOUS, but cost a pretty penny and aren’t even avail for sale anymore. You should make an eBay alert for them as I saw a bunch of sold listings of them in the $60-100 range

Have you found any gold shoes you like yet? Do you think you will do a post when you do?

    1. To be honest, I’ve now seen over 100 pairs, if I had to guess. And though many options people have sent are awesome, I haven’t pulled the trigger just yet. I’m thinking I might go for a simple ballet pair at J.Crew factory at this point. They are a 1/2 smaller than I’d like, but I stretched out a black pair that are the same size and they are super comfy.

So if I had to guess, I’ll go with this: http://factory.jcrew.com/womens-clothing/shoes/balletflats/PRDOVR~36017/36017.jsp?color_name=pale-gold. Great price. Comfy. Classic style.

        1. I know. Oh well. I am still kinda holding out hope that they eventually come back in stock.

  14. Tori

This may be too late after the fact, but I actually saw these exact shoes a few days ago in Target (in Brooklyn). Perhaps they are bringing them back?

    Good luck with the search!

    1. Really?! The sequin sewn ones? I have seen some similar ones there that have actual crystals glued to them that I don’t really love. But if they have the sequin ones – I gotta get back there and grab them. Thank you!

      1. Tori

The ones I saw had the sequins, not crystals. Good luck!

        1. Amazing. Everywhere I’ve looked there are just the crystals, not sequins. I’m jealous of your Target. Thanks for sharing!
